A hurricane of giant proportions named Irma has just passed parts of the Caribbean causing destruction and harm in places like Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Florida as well as smaller Caribbean islands. Winds of such immense strength usually emerge and grow rather quickly – as soon as they reach a certain size, they are sure to make headlines worldwide. You can help: send money to Cuba now – without fees!

In Cuba ten people were killed by hurricane Irma. Throughout the island various cities are flooded, the entire infrastructure collapsed. Also, economic damage has been recorded. 40 percent of all sugar mills nationwide have been damaged – the sugar industry counting for one of the biggest industries in Cuba.

Hurricane Irma, categorized as the heaviest storm to have reached the Caribbean in decades, executed relentless and life-threatening assaults on every island that stood in its path. There are, however, certain rules of protection to obey in case of a hurricane: never stay outside and seek for shelter within the deeper areas of your house, for instance, a basement.

Some of you may be curious to know more about hurricanes. How do they form? How fast do they become? There are, indeed, quite a few interesting things to learn about this truly fascinating natural phenomenon. We at sendvalu thought the same and began investigating a little! Of course, we are not going to withhold the information we’ve successfully retrieved – rather we’re going to share them with all our beloved customers in this article!

The place where hurricanes form

It is quite easy to determine the geographical surroundings of areas in which hurricanes form – wherever they surface, be sure there are trade winds around. For instance, you can find trade winds in certain regions of the Atlantic Ocean: one particular location is to be found near the Portuguese group of islands Cape Verde, which lies near the African West coast. Now that hurricane-related news mostly originate from the Americas, some hurricanes must have travelled a long way. The same applies to hurricane Irma! Another good reason, to send money to Cuba an help the Cuban people.

Other locations that feature trade winds and thus enable the forming of hurricanes are mostly located in the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. Obviously, the East Atlantic is not the only location that counts for the birthplace of hurricanes! Instead, they also form in the immediate vicinity of North- and Central American countries and of the Caribbean. Since journalists worldwide tend to pay much attention to events taking place in the Americas, hurricanes in these regions do make headlines on a regular basis.

How Hurricanes form

We’ve just learned in which exact surroundings Hurricanes form – however, the question how they form still remains. What are some of the scientific processes and phenomenons that lie beneath it all?

One requirement facilitating the formation of hurricanes is that the water temperature must be higher than 80 degree Fahrenheit. With regard to the right temperature, huge amounts of seawater will begin to condensate, rise up and cause the air within the clouds to heat up. Low pressure allows for more steamy air from the water surface to constantly rise up. Once the air has reached the higher regions, high pressure in these regions causes the freshly blown up hot air to be blared out again.

One could say that a hurricane nourishes itself through its constant connection to the water surface, soaking up hot steamy air from that area. Therefore, it does not come as a surprise that hurricanes will lose strength once they reach the shore. The further they move inland, the less powerful they are – understandably, once their supply of hot steamy air ceases to exist the hurricane weakens and vanishes eventually. And so did Irma on Cuba – remember to help the Cuban people and send money to Cuba.

Hurricane classifications

In order for a storm to fully qualify as a hurricane, we must postulate certain requirements. According to the Saffir-Simpson scale, a hurricane reaches a minimum speed of 73 miles per hour. Once a hurricane reaches a speed between 73 miles per hour and 94 miles per hour, it’ll be classified as a category 1 hurricane. Category 5 serves as the highest classification for hurricanes – once a hurricane reaches a speed of 156 miles per hour or higher you can be sure to be facing an enormously devastating type of hurricane.

Early warning systems: can hurricanes be predicted at very early stages?

Satellites can provide images which help scientists discover suspicious cloud formations. As soon as these formations have been identified, special planes fly into the center of the hurricane accumulating information regarding wind speed, wind direction, temperature and pressure. Unfortunately, some estimations turned out to be completely false – in 2007, a low pressure area was mistakenly categorized as a category 1 hurricane even though it would later transform itself into a massive category 5 hurricane.
